Microsoft Mandated to Offer Windows 10 Extended Security Updates Free of Charge in Europe

Following intervention from the European Commission, Microsoft has been compelled to provide Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 entirely free to European users. These updates were initially intended to be a paid service, but concerns regarding cybersecurity and fair competition prompted the Commission to act to ensure all users receive necessary protection. This decision aims to safeguard vulnerable users who may be unable to afford security updates, ensuring their operating systems remain secure against evolving threats. Furthermore, this action promotes healthy competition within the market, preventing users from being forced to upgrade to newer operating systems solely to receive vital security patches. Microsoft will now offer these updates without cost to all Windows 10 users within the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. This move is designed to maintain public user security and foster equity in the software market.
